My Little Halloween Warrior

How Do you know when Halloween was successful?
Simple When your child comes home looking like this ...

For the last 10 weeks little Miss Willow has been talking non-stop about being
a Mermaid for Halloween
She also decided that her big brother should be a shark!
Gotta love my son because he just went along with it ... He truly is a "Team Player"
Anyway when the night started out she looked like this ...
Notice the perfectly styled hair,
how there are two shells on her dress,
and the necklace is all neat and tidy.

This kid is a trooper all she cared about was getting
MORE CANDY!
I couldn't help but giggle at the way she looked.
She seem to resemble a disheveled beauty queen.
Take note of how she carries her candy bucket just like it was a purse!

As the night was coming to an end The Bean announced,
"Daddy you carry me!  Mommy, you get the CANDY!"
This little one has no quit in her.
Hope your candy buckets were over flowing with lots of loot!

From Pants to Shorts to a Skirt; an Upcycled Story

Monday, September 12, 2011

So I bought my husband a pair of khaki pants for Christmas
He proceeded to tear the leg like the 3rd time he wore them
Aughhhh...
I put them away in my "to fix"pile
Okay it took me 8 months but I finally got around to turning them into these

It took me ten minutes to cut the pants legs off below the tear
a quick hem and my hubby gained some new shorts.

I was all set to pack up my machine for the night
when I realized I still had the two legs that I had cut off.

The fabric was really nice and I hated to just throw it away.
After much thought I realized that they could become a skirt for the Bean!
First I ripped open the inseam of each cut off leg

I then cut the legs down the the length I wanted the skirt to be
plus 1 1/2" for the turn back at the waist.

I joined the two legs together
Folded the top back a 1/4" then 1 1/4 to create the casing for a 1" elastic waistband.
I made two patch pockets from the remaining scraps

A cute new skirt for free
Gotta love that!

Slip Cover Craziness #6

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Okay is everybody ready to get rid of the channel back and make it smooth and a bit more contemporary?

Here goes ....

I used some polyfil from old pillows to "Stuff" the channels

After you have "stuffed" the channels it is time to cover the front
I placed a piece of the batting over the front of the chair.
You know the kind you would use to make a baby quilt.
100% cotton

I then began to stretch and pin the cotton batting in place

Using a heavier thread I then hand sewed the batting in place
This will help keep it from shifting under the slipcover.

How are your pieces coming along?
I would love to feature a my readers slips.
Leave me a comment with a link to your post so I can show off your talents!

Pattern Testers Needed

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Sorry guys no Slipcover Craziness this week.
My husband was out of town for work all last week
and we went to Upstate New York for cousins wedding.

What I have been focusing on with what little free time I've had
is the Sassafras Dress
The pattern is off at the graders and I should have it back early next week.

So I am looking for a  few followers to be pattern testers
and give me some input on our newest pattern.
If selected you will be required to sew one up in the size assigned to you
with in two weeks of receiving the pattern.
You will need to post pics and write a short post about being a pattern tester.

If you are up for the challenge leave me a comment with the size you are requesting
Then send an email to willowbeanstudio@gmail.com
with the size you requested in the subject line.

Sizes will be awarded on a first come first serve basis
So post your comments quickly before they are all gone.

Little Miss Sassafras

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Not sure where she gets it from or where she picked it up
But when I asked Bean to model my newest dress pattern;
this is the look she gave me ...
Somewhere along the way she decided that all models pout and put their hand on their hips
Her poses got even better when I told her I needed
a closeup of the pleats on the dress above her belly.

She proceeded to pull her dress up to show off her belly
which ended up covering the pleats I wanted to highlight
KIDS
After I promised to reward her with a lollipop I was able to get the shots I was looking for

So here goes
Our Newest Pattern
Little Miss Sassafras
Named for Willow's behavior during our photo shoot.
I guess I can't get too mad

Slipcover Craziness #5

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

It has been a while since I last posted about this topic.
This week we are going to finish up the back of the chair
and add our cording.
After positioning the back panel on my chair
I realized there was too much excess fabric at the base of the chair
So off I went to grab my seam ripper
It is for this reason that I will work on a section and then walk away from it
It is amazing how when you return to a project after a short break
how you notice all the imperfections

So I refit the back
Don't you love all my threads from where I seam ripped!
The problem was the chair is much narrower at the base
This means to keep my pattern match I am forced to go off grain
Since i am working with a large all over pattern that is not a stripe or a plaid
I felt it was okay to do this and most people would not notice it
The major reason I wanted the back to have a snug fit and perfect pattern match
at the side seems from top to bottom is the back of this piece
is the first thing you see when you walk in the house!
By keeping the back snug it won't look so country or like your grandmothers slipcovers
Keeping the pattern match from top to bottom ensures
that the piece will have that custom designer look I am going for

After I adjusted the side seams
I pulled and pinned the sides to the front edge of the chair.
I was now ready to cut back the excess fabric on the side panels
When cutting be sure to cut at least an 1" away
from where you will join to the arm and center front panels
This allows you some wiggle room if you need to adjust the piece later on

It is time to add the cording
Pin the cording so it lines up with the edge of your piece
Remember you will be sandwiching it between panels
The cording acts like a transition from the back to the front
It also helps to draw the eye around the piece
Try to create a smooth line with the cording as you go
This will pay off big time when we tackle the front.
Well, that's all for this week!

Slipcover Craziness Week #4

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

I am taking a short break from working on the chair.
Not by choice, I was a bit forced into the situation.
See my machine BROKE ... BIG TIME BREAK
Last week.
I'm talking needle bending kinda breakage.
I'm so bummed my machine no can longer sew a seam :(
I did score a back up machine, but it's not the same.
So while I wait for my baby to get back from the repair shop
Here is a little inspiration

I don't know about you but I am dying to get back to slippin'
Now if I only had my machine :(
